Urban Mixer Rebrand Phase 1

Monday, October 30th, 2006

Urban Mixer has gained tremendous popularity over the last three years and it’s time to take the brand to the next level.

We’re making changes as time permits – here’s what’s happened already:

  • New tagline: “The cure for the common social life”

Urban Mixer isn’t just about singles anymore. We’ve absorbed the Social Empire brand and have opened our offering to social singles and dynamic duos since you can’t be single forever. Don’t worry – we still do awesome singles only events like the speed dating and dinner party events. You’ll definitely know when it’s a singles only event.

  • Urban Mixer Blog

Better coverage of events, up-to-the minute information and a really snazzy interface. If you’re reading this, you’re reading our blog.

Over the last few months we’ve taken alot of input from our members, readers and subscribers and we’re making some great changes. There’s more to come – this is just the begginning. Stay tuned and enjoy the ride.

- Raj Taneja, President

A Very Special Evening at Rare One Restaurant

Sunday, October 29th, 2006

Tonight was a very special treat at Rare. A $100-a-head fundraising benefit that had four very talented chefs collaborate on an eight-course extravaganza. Pure heaven.

Click HERE to find out more about the event.

DSC01459 DSC01454 DSC01448 DSC01482 DSC01432
The MC: Tamara Taggart, CTV

The Music: Adam Woodall

The chefs:

  • Robert Belcham (C, Fuel)
  • Brian Fowke (Rare One)
  • Sean Heather (The Irish Heather, Salt, Pepper)
  • Colin Johnson (Parkside)
  • Neil Wyles (Hamilton Street Grill)

The catch:

  • All local ingredients
  • All items made from ingredients procured the same day

The menu:

  • Champagne & canapes
  • cauliflower & truffle shooter
  • pumpkin ravioli • beurre noisette emulsion • amarettini-sage crumble
  • fenel risotto • neon squid • malt-cured oak-smoked bacon
  • duck soup • black beluga lentils & evergreen organic autumn vegetables
  • butter-sauteed sablefsh • tarragon • chantrelles & porcini • apple puree
  • Blue Goose organic beef • Dungeness mashed potatoes • red wine reduction
  • Okanagan apples five ways • Gala • Ambrosia • Granny Smith
  • local cheeses & charcuterie

There was a wine pairing also available for the event at an optional cost of $60 – of course I endulged and was duly rewarded:

  • Castello della Sala Chardonnay Umbria, Italy 2004

Produced at a 14th century Castle, located 11 miles from the town of Orvieto where the micro-climate makes it ideal for the production of cooler-weather wines such as Chardonnay.

  • L’ecole No. 41 Semillon Columbia Valley, Washington 2004

L’Ecole Nº 41 has been making Semillon since 1983 and is recognized in the industry as one of the top producers of this varietal. Few Semillons show their richness and complexitiy as those produced in Washington State. A 91 point Wine Enthusiast rating.

  • Louis Jadot Cote de Nuits-Villages “Le Vaucrain” Burgundy, 2000
  • Argyle Pinot Noir Willamette, Oregon 2004

Wine Spectator has called Argyle the “premier winery in Oregon”. This is what a cool, marine climate Pinot Noir is all about. Wine Spectator rating of 89 points.

  • St. Francis “Nunn’s Canyon” Reserve Merlot Sonoma, California 1998

This wine is a monster. Absolutely massive tannins that need to be tamed with food. Try with the bone in Tenderloin or the New York Striploin. Huge intensity of flavour here with cherry plummy spicy fruit and a smoky vanilla finish. A 92 point Anthony Gismondi rating

  • Buller Fine Old Muscat

Reddish amber in colour, with a concentrated raisiny sweetness on the palate and a long, lingering finish. Robert Parker rating of 96 points.

  • Masi Costasera Amarone Veneto, Italy 2001

The Costasera Amarone expresses a particular majesty and complexity. Ideal with red meats, game and mature cheeses also an excellent wine for the end of the meal.

Over $13,000 was raised for Tina which makes for a very successful event. Thanks to Tim Keller, Brian Fowke and Neil Wyles for planning such an excellent event!

Three Great Halloween Parties

Sunday, October 29th, 2006

October 28th, for all intents and purposes (or is that for all intensive purposes), Halloween weekend in Vancouver. There’s a plethora of great events on the calendar including Sin City’s ubiquitous fetish party at Richards on Richards, the sold out and highly anticipated Jet Set Halloween at Macaroni Grill and DJ Funk at Salon des Bourgoisie (in the Biltmore).

Malheureusement, I didn’t make it out to all of the parties – here’s a rundown of the places I did get a chance to go to:

Jet Set Crew’s Halloween at Macaroni Grill. Click HERE to find out more about this event.

DSC01354 DSC01374 DSC01376 DSC01381 DSC01384

Hollywood Duke also caught a bunch of good pictures HERE and HERE.

The sold out event had Vancouver’s beautiful people come out in force. As always, Craig Stowe and Jamie Goehring know how to throw a great event. Next party on October 18th at the Aquarium.

Salon des Bourgeoisie featuring DJ Funk. Click HERE to find out more about this event.

DSC01398 DSC01400 DSC01401 DSC01402 DSC01399

DJ Funk, the king of booty funk, was supposed to come out and move the crowd. Unfortunately he was denied entry into the country – something about not having the right form. Either way, it didn’t really hurt the crowd.

MSTRKRFT and my!gay!husband at shine. Click HERE to find out more about this event.

DSC01395 DSC01403 DSC01406 DSC01407 DSC01409

MSTRKRFT is an awesome DJ. Great club event – shine was packed and the crowd was having a great time. But oh! What a hangover!

DC and Vice President – Last Rites

Friday, October 27th, 2006

An exhibition opening at a funeral parlour featuring works reflecting everything morbid. How cool is that?

The art wasn’t all too morbid but the RSVP-mandatory event was excellent. Good music (again, not too morbid), good artwork and  definitely a hipster crowd. Complimentary vodka-redbull, beer or wine was definitely a real plus.

There’s another event coming up at the same location called HIVE. It should be up on the Urban Mixer calendar soon.

Read more about the event HERE.

Over $500,000 was raised for the Lions Society of BC at the Greater Vancouver and Whistler edition of the Spirit Bear Live Auction and Gala.

One of the most touching stories was of Jeanie, Whistler’s Spirit Bear, which was purchased by a man for $50,000 in dedication to Jeanie, his daughter.

You can read more about what transpired at the auction on my personal blog, HERE.
