Gee, I guess I’d better lay off the nectar, eh. Hey Tink! Gimme a boilermaker! Still, I can’t help but get carried away: once the cherry trees start to blossom and the virgins herald my arrival at Bar None by throwing crocuses in my path I come over all Gene Kelly in “Singin’ in the Rain,” with a side of Oberon. Now that Spring is unequivocally here, let’s get together and work out some of that Spring Fever on Saturday or any other night of the week.

2 commentsThursday Night in Vancouver
Thursday night’s scattered showers didn’t deter anyone from going out and having a great time. With so much going on, the Nelly Furtado concert, opening receptions at Eliott Louis Gallery, the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, the Winsor Gallery, Bacardi’s B-Live inaugural event and more, there certainly wasn’t a lack of things to do.

Bacardi 2007 White Party titled ‘Cabana’
Bacardi Canada’s fiscal year ends March 30th, 2007. As a result of this event, Bacardi works hard to ensure that they spend the money that was budgeted for the year - usually in the form of their white party.
On Thursday, March 15th, thousands of partygoers, dressed in white, flocked to Caprice nightclub to experience Bacardi’s biggest event of the year, ‘Cabana‘. The interior was set for the event and some of the set design even reminded me of Sanafir. It’s amazing what one can do with a little bit of budget and a professional crew in this city.

No commentsThe California Wine Fair Ballroom Tasting @ Fairmont Waterfront Hotel
Sweet Jag, man! Thanks to MCL Motors for showing off their sleek new cat. Speaking of Jaguars, for those who think California wines are all about Jaguar Juice, then this event sets the record straight. With the beautiful and diverse climates of California, coupled with the inventiveness of its winemakers, her wines reflect this incredible diversity and genius.
One very noticeable theme was the prevalence of Sauvignon Blanc. Seems almost every vintner had an offering, most done in the crisp, fruity style that catapulted New Zealand’s Sauvignon Blancs to prominence. Particularly interesting were the Sauvignon Republic, St. Supery, and Frog’s Leap Sauvignon Blancs.
My Croatian heritage gives me a natural affinity for California’s signature immigrant grape, Zinfandel. Everything from the aforementioned cougar juice to big bomb reds were well represented. Some standouts were the Zins from Ravesnswood, Seghesio, Steele, and a groovy Zin from Jessie’s Grove as well as the Bogle Petit Shirah, and a nice range of wines from relatively unknown Lucas and Lewellen.
Happy patrons enjoyed over 300 wines and took the opportunity to bid on silent auction items including lifestyle packages and many of the hard to find wines featured at the tasting. Many thanks go US consulate and sponsors for make benefit glorious theatre of Arts Club!

Join me in raising a tumbler of Redbreast to St. Patrick’s blessed week; our events calendar is your cheat sheet to the best week so far this year. Just remember to pace yourself: have a Guinness or a Harp between your Bushmills (actually, I heard that it stings when you get it in between your Bushmills).
