Sometimes it takes a strong dose of one spirit to settle another, so I always take a nip of brandy whenever I’m bothered by the sight of, say, a shrunken head. Which I also keep handy.

On these long nights you just never know what you might run into, so wear your good underwear at all times. Don’t worry if it’s flimsy: at Urban Mixer you can always find someone who will be happy to keep you warm, should your blood be running cold from the sight of a random headless monk or the tab at the city’s finest gothic crypt of delights.

Canadian Club Launches Limited Edition Collectors Bottles

On Thursday, October 25th, Urban Mixer got the inside scoop on the new Canadian Club bottles, styled with themes relating to the days of the Prohibition, hitting the shelves in liquor stores right now.

The media-only dinner, featured a tasting and education with Canadian Club, Canadian Club Reserve and Canadian Classic 12, which turned out to be completely different recipes altogether rather than different ages of the same blended Whiskey (sic).

The limited edition Prohibition-styled bottles contain factual information about the brand including references to the term ‘The Real McCoy’, The Valentines Day Massacre of 1929, the U.S. attempt at embargoing the more popular and higher quality Canadian Whiskey in the 1890’s (sounds like softwood lumber), and Al Capone’s secret codes.

Check out the original release after the jump and remember, as Dan Tullio, the Godfather of Canadian Club likes to say, “you can’t spell success without ‘cc’!”

The event sold out and was a huge success. The silent auction with premium items as well as the designs by Jacqueline Conoir, Blushing Designs and Chloë Angus which hit the runway helped raise funds for this worthy cause. As a unique twist, designer Chloë Angus used breast cancer survivors as her models.

Walrus Foundation “The Walrus is Coming to Town”

The Walrus Foundation Fundraiser

The Walrus Foundation Fundraiser The Walrus Foundation Fundraiser The Walrus Foundation Fundraiser The Walrus Foundation Fundraiser The Walrus Foundation Fundraiser

“We put a magazine on stage” was the simple, to the point, statement made by the Walrus Magazine’s editor publisher Shelley Ambrose in describing the absolutely elegant affair at Theatre Calgary on October 22, aptly named “the Walrus is coming to Town.” Not unlike the magazine itself, the evening proved to be truly entertaining and educational. The program included readings by two of Alberta’s most dynamic and sophisticated writers; Aritha van Herk, author of “Audacious and Adamant, the Story of Maverick Alberta” and Will Ferguson, author of “Spanish Fly.” Prominent media figures, Kirk Heuser (CTV), Jill Belland (CityTV) and Stephen Hunt (Calgary Herald) acted out a scene from the play “Big Ticket” (written by Jim Garrard and directed by Dennis Garnhum.) Michael Robinson, President of the Glenbow Museum led the audience through a thought provoking conversation on the subject of national power dynamics with Canada West Foundation President Roger Gibbins and pollster Allan Gregg. Perhaps the most enchanting part of the evening, however, was the incomparable Molly Johnson, as she seduced the audience with her beautiful jazz vocalist style.

The post-reception party, hosted by Transcontinental, included a delectable martini bar, the smooth musical styling of master pianist, Stephan Moccio and a silent auction to raise funds for the Walrus Foundation. Perhaps the most interesting of silent auction items was the chance to be a character in a Margaret Atwood novel. Ten minutes before the auction close, the bid was at a whopping (and gracious) $6500 and growing. Overall, a truly memorable experience! The Walrus should come to town more often!

You can read more about the Walrus’ event in Vancouver on October 9th, HERE. The Walrus Magazine is located online HERE.

The play, which was co-directed by Matthew Harrison and Susie Knight and stars Tiffany Rice, Josh Vokey, Michael Edwards and Laura Adkin “is a fast-moving, hilarious, romantic comedy of the new millennium exploring the intricacies of adult relationships, sexual harassment, feminism, love and the possibility of a four sided love triangle.”

The setting of the play is in Vancouver which makes the Havana Theatre the perfect venue to host it. Check out the Urban Mixer Events Calendar HERE and HERE for individual listings for this event. A definite must see show!
