The cure for the common social life

The Pillowman

The Pillowman, which plays until the 20th of April, opened up last Thursday at the Firehall Arts Centre on Cordova Street just East of Main.

The Pillowman by Martin McDonagh

Written by Martin McDonagh and directed by Adam Henderson, the Pillowman is an especially dark black comedy that tells the tale of Katurian, a fiction writer living in a police state who is interrogated about the gruesome content of his short stories, and their similarities to a number of bizarre child murders occurring in his town.

The Pillowman by Martin McDonagh

Awarded Laurence Olivier Award for Best new play in 2004 and nominated for Tony Award for Best Play in 2005.

Throughout the whole show, we were on the edge of our seat. At times, the tension in the room was so thick, you could cut it with a knife. Variety calls it McDonagh’s least forgiving, bravest play. Something definitely worth seeing.

After the jump, check out the producer, Carrie Wheeler’s, thanks for a sold out opening night:

Subject: We were SOLD OUT Opening Night!!!

Hello everyone!

Thank you to all who attended Thursday’s packed house preview night and/or Friday’s SOLD OUT Opening Night! Your patronage is greatly appreciated!

So far, we’ve had standing ovations three out of three nights, have had “must see” rave reviews, several guests coming back for a second night bringing additional friends, and, to quote one Vancouver Director who attended the premiere, “I can honestly say it held up very well against the big-time Broadway production.”, which he saw in New York starring Jeff Goldblum. It doesn’t get much better than that! Ha!

For those of you who haven’t seen the show yet, not to fret. We have 5 more performances including one this evening, Sunday the 13th with Wednesday the 16th being “pay what you can night” . Regular performances also on Friday the 18th, Saturday the 19th and our Finale on Sunday the 20th, showtime is 8pm each night.

I highly encourage you to pre-book your tickets at the Firehall Box Office at 604.689.0926.

I personally will be at the Wednesday and Friday shows and look forward to seeing you there!

Best,
Carrie :)
