VOYEUR NOCTURNE by Amyn Nasser at TRUNK gallery

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

In this exhibition, Amyn Nasser is portraying something beyond what is being exhibited and the true image is in the viewer’s consciousness for which the exhibition is a representation. The reality is concealed in the allusion of the illusion. – Ray Barnes

VOYEUR NOCTURNE by Amyn Nasser at TRUNK gallery

Amyn Nasser’s Voyeur Nocturne is a photographic celebration of Vancouver as the better known “city of glass.” With its high population density relative to most other North American cities, urban planning in Vancouver is characterized by high-rise residential and mixed-use development in the city centre as an alternative to urban sprawl. Glass condominium towers dominate the skyline and have been credited in contributing to the city’s high rankings in livability. Amyn Nasser has effectively captured this unique ‘feel’ which is so defining of Vancouver, where each layer symbolizes the excitement and vibrancy of inner city life. If windows are the eyes to the soul, can the same be said for the soul of a city?

After a ten-month long sojourn to various places in the city, the Voyeur Nocturne Series was born. It captured different viewpoints after the setting of the sun and the coming of the evening lights in the city. A good number of the amazing shots were a product of careful planning and consideration with their own share of opportunities and challenges. Coinciding with the 23rd Winter Olympiad, the exhibition strives to live up to the same Olympic spirit that humanity aspires for – higher, faster, stronger.

Amy Nasser is a self-taught visualist from Zanzibar and has become one of the leading photographers in the world. His work has graced the covers and editorial pages of the finest magazines including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle and Cosmopolitan. A well-traveled professional who is one of the most sought-after for international field missions in several African countries and at the same time is experienced in the mannerisms needed for his image.

“I believe in the photographer’s magic, the ability to stir the soul with light and shape and color. Through the photographer’s eyes a kiss becomes a romance, a stretch of fabric is a costume of endless possibilities, …a face has the playful vibrancy that describes a lifetime… I strive for a visual split second capture that tells a story with mood, style, motion, and mystery by creating powerful color, and striking black & white images. My juxtaposed vision is very much influenced by the East-West culture that I have grown up with.” – Amyn Nasser

Voyeur Nocturne will close on Monday, March 15, 2010

The event was attended by company bigwigs led by Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd President and CEO Geesung Choi together with Canadian ice hockey superstar and Samsung Athlete Ambassador Wayne Gretzky. They were joined by Gerhard Heiberg, Chairman of Marketing Commission of the IOC, John Furlong, CEO of VANOC, Gordon Campbell, Premier of British Columbia, and Tewanee Joseph, CEO and Executive Director, Four Host Nations.

The theme of the opening event was a celebration of the talking stick and a hugely botched homage to Canada’s First Nations. As part of the entertainment of the event, a largely unknown dance troupe bearing Samsung’s name and wearing tight-fitting costumes pranced around stage waving their rendition of the talking stick. The dance choreography, certainly didn’t match the calibre of people in the room and resembled a show one might catch in a Las Vegas strip joint. When asked for commentary, the Four Host Nations CEO Tewanee Joseph appeared too appalled to comment.

Located in Vancouver’s David Lam Park, the OR@S showcased Samsung’s industry leading wireless communications technology and provide athletes and fans with the opportunity to discover their every WOW moment. The venue was  a relaxing retreat for athletes and spectators, and featured Samsung’s latest mobile phone technologies, interactive displays and live entertainment.

The Athlete Centre, which was found on the upper level of the OR@S, was also known as the “Official Meeting Place for Athletes and Their Families.” A lounge was available for the athletes and their family members for get-togethers and a place to enjoy the celebrations. The Samsung OMNIA II touchscreen smartphone – The Official Mobile Device of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games – was available for athletes to make free phone calls to the family and friends back home.

The features of the OR@S, which debuted at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, included a special performance by DubArtist Chris Casillan and music by the cell-phone orchestra as well as daily performances from the Cirque des Communications of Canada as they match the well-known Vancouver image of “the integration of nature with urban life” with a spectacular light display.  There was also a musical performance by Canadian singer and songwriter Jenny Galt, and  daily ambient music and lighting effects from Vancouver’s own DJ Jon O’Neal.

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

Art is life and life is art.

Becker Galleries Opening

Being around art for most of her life, Michele Becker has finally left the comfort of one of the most prestigious art galleries in Vancouver to open her own and try to directly contribute to the artistic and cultural development in Canada. Michele has been in the art industry for the past eighteen years and has managed some of Canada’s most notable art galleries as well as help future artists in their struggle to make a mark in Canada’s art scene. Aside from her contribution to the art industry, she also has time to help out charities that are, in one way or another, related to art.

Some people who came to appreciate the works of art at the opening were VersayPay executive Jeff Sheremeta, account executive Makkaida Vischon, realtor Alexis Palkowski and a bevy of artists, both presenting and some out just to support Michele.

With a bevy of more than twenty of artists, the newest art gallery in town aims to represent the established and upcoming artists as well as playing host to international exhibitions at its location.

Jolly’s Indian Bistro

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

“It is not an ordinary Indian restaurant where you go for curry, it is  a treat for the eyes and soul. Excellent place to go with family and best friends.” – Trip Advisor

Dinner at Jolly's Indian Bistro

A treat it was indeed, a feast for the eyes and the soul . . . and good for the stomach too. Jolly’s Indian Bistro located at the heart of the Kitsilano has recently moved a few blocks further West to a more spacious and elegant venue.  Inspired from traditional Northern and Southern recipes, and enhanced by his culinary skills, Jolly’s creations are rich in flavours and aroma, using freshly ground, specially handpicked spices from India to ensure a traditional taste to every dish.

The Jolly Indian Bistro has a cozy and warm atmosphere where the staff is polite and attentive even as the owner, Jolly Kumar, will also come out of his kitchen and personally talk with his guests giving the bistro an added personal touch.

The appetizers of the bistro include the bite-size Paneer Pakoras (mixed vegetables and home-made cheese which are fried to a crisp with chickpea flour batter), the Samosa (potatos and peas wrapped in light pastry served with peas and chutney) and the Lamb Boti Kabab (marinated lamb cutlets in chilies and rare spices roasted in a tandoori oven and served with a small salad)

For the entrees, you can try the Mumbai Chicken Masala (Stuffed chicken breast with spinach and paneer with tomato and mushroom chutney), the Kashmiri Lamb Rogenjosh (Leg of lamb pressure cooked with rare mixed spices and mint), Goa Fish Fry (cod fillet marinated with spices and lemon juice finished to perfection with onion sauce), or the Butter Chicken ala Jolly (a boneless chicken breast marinated with yoghurt and tandoori masala, roasted and infused with light cream sauce), or the Delhi 6 Daal (black lentils simmered slowly with kidney beans, and finished with desi ghee ginger and garlic taka.)

After you’ve had your fill of the main dishes, you can try their desserts: the chocolate cake served with whipped cream, Ras Mala (an Indian cottage cheese flat dumpling in pistachio, rosewater and saffron infused milk), and an exotically spiced carrot cake that has real cream cheese icing.

And for those that are thirsty, they serve several non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks including Raj beer.
