<p>&#8220;We put a magazine on stage&#8221; was the simple, to the point, statement made by the Walrus Magazine&#8217;s <strike>editor</strike> publisher Shelley Ambrose in describing the absolutely elegant affair at Theatre Calgary on October 22, aptly named &#8220;the Walrus is coming to Town.&#8221; Not unlike the magazine itself, the evening proved to be truly entertaining and educational. The program included readings by two of Alberta&#8217;s most dynamic and sophisticated writers; Aritha van Herk, author of &#8220;Audacious and Adamant, the Story of Maverick Alberta&#8221; and Will Ferguson, author of &#8220;Spanish Fly.&#8221; Prominent media figures, Kirk Heuser (CTV), Jill Belland (CityTV) and Stephen Hunt (Calgary Herald) acted out a scene from the play &#8220;Big Ticket&#8221; (written by Jim Garrard and directed by Dennis Garnhum.) Michael Robinson, President of the Glenbow Museum led the audience through a thought provoking conversation on the subject of national power dynamics with Canada West Foundation President Roger Gibbins and pollster Allan Gregg. Perhaps the most enchanting part of the evening, however, was the incomparable Molly Johnson, as she seduced the audience with her beautiful jazz vocalist style.</p>
<p>The post-reception party, hosted by Transcontinental, included a delectable martini bar, the smooth musical styling of master pianist, Stephan Moccio and a silent auction to raise funds for the Walrus Foundation. Perhaps the most interesting of silent auction items was the chance to be a character in a Margaret Atwood novel. Ten minutes before the auction close, the bid was at a whopping (and gracious) $6500 and growing. Overall, a truly memorable experience! The Walrus should come to town more often!</p>
